Just picked up GOTY Edition myself the other day on Steam. Crashed every 30 seconds or so. Works perfectly now. Apparently it's an issue the game has with Quad-Core CPUs. Doesn't like them, so this limits the game to only use 2, which it was designed for. Funny thing, I only have a dual-core CPU, and I was getting the crashes, and this fixed it. For this purpose seems to have never been as complete and accessible as this year. I recently started playing Fallout 3 GOTY again on my new computer. This new computer has NO issues playing Farcry 3, Bioshock Infinite, and other new games at Ultra settings. When playing the afformentioned games, it usually takes about 3-4 hours of continuous play for the system to be in any real danger of freezing during gameplay. The freezing can occur at any random moment, it seems. It can even happen when my character is just idly standing around.Fallout 3 is different though. Every few minutes the game will freeze, not crash, but freeze. Only a forced restart allows me to get back to other things. My system is running on Windows 7 (64bit)Can someone tell me if there's a fix for these random freezings? This is a pinned topic at the top of the threads.did you try this?1. Add the following lines to the FALLOUT.INI file in C://myname/documents/my games/fallout3/(at the end of the General section of the ini file)bUseThreadedAI=1iNumHWThreads=2Just do an Edit/Find and type in the following and click Find Next:DisplayThe Display section comes right after the General section, so paste those two line above Display.(i'd rename any ini file i was going to change to e.g., fallout3original.ini or something as well before making any changes to the ini file. Copy it somewhere then change the one in the my games/fallout3 folder and make sure its named FALLOUT.INI, then move the fallout3original.ini back into the my games/fallout3 folder. That's just in case you mess up the FALLOUT.INI file; then you can delete the one you messed up and rename fallout3original.ini to FALLOUT.INI)2. Add the D3D9 file to the folder that contains Fallout3.exe you may need to delete your save file before you add D3D9. (if you have any saves, i'd move it to another location, e.g. Either my desktop or to a new folder i made in the 'my games' file named fallout3oldsaves or something similar. BTW, most of this info is in the pinned topic at the top of the discussion forum. You should check there for info on running fallout 3 on windows 7 or 8.1. The easy way to get the D3D9 file is to go hereread the description, then click on the files tab at the top, download the first file, and install it. If that doesn't work, delete that file, download the second file and install that one. (i think the two files are for 32 and 64 bit systems but i don't know which one is for 32 bit and which one is for 64 bit systems.)if you have an ATI card and use transparency AA, you may need to use this location instead2. The harder (but safer) way is described heresince that way involves downloading the file from microsoft, it should be safe.FWIW, i've never had a problem with files i've downloaded from the nexus forum but, if you choose step 1, you may want to scan the file before you open it in winrar/7-zip/whatever file extracter you use just in case. Fallout 3 Win 10 Freeze FixWhy Is Fallout 3 CrashingAnd since the first location in step 1 is linked in the pinned thread here (the one i talked about above), it should be safe.good luck!btw, if you get the game to work, when you move the old saves back to the my games/fallout 3 folder, you'll either need to merge the two save files (the old one that you moved and the new one that's now in your my games/fallout3 folder) or else open the old saves folder and move or copy the old saves into your new saves folder. I made this mistake and it created hours of frustration for me.Make sure you are NOT editing the files in the main fallout 3 folder, you need to be inside. Specifically usersyournamedocumentsmy gamesfallout3Right click this file and open notepad:My Documentsmy gamesFallout3FALLOUT.inior C:usersyournameDocumentsMy GamesFallout3FALLOUT.iniThis may appear as 'FALLOUT' in windows explorer.WARNING: DO NOT EDIT Falloutdefault.ini!!! You're in the wrong directory!!!find (control F) bUseThreadedAI=0CHANGE to bUseThreadedAI=1Immediately after this line, ADD this new line:iNumHWThreads=2.
